Franz Schubert Symphony No. 8 in B minor (“Unfinished”), D. 759
***
Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 3 (E flat major, “Eroica”)
Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra
János Kovács conductor
Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony No. 8 from 1822 comprises, instead of the usual four-movement structure, only two movements. Music historians have come up with many different hypotheses as to the reason it remained unfinished, but even today, we still do not know for certain. The work confronts the listener with the duality of a dark, tragic and fatalistic style combined with mellow lyricism.
The four movements of the Symphony No. 3, which was composed between 1802 and
1804, could be the portrait of a hero. The opening movement of the first movement
returns in gloriously transfigured form at its end. This is followed by a scherzo, a funeral
march and, finally, a movement of variations – including one in a Hungarian verbunkos
style – on a German dance, tune. Beethoven originally subtitled the symphony
„Buonaparte”, but changed this to Eroica after Napoleon crowned himself emperor.
Concert-format opera performance in three acts, with one intermission, in French
Chamber concert by artists of the Hungarian National Philharmonic
